Why the Dance Floor is Empty

by Rekesha Pittman

Make no mistake about it, movement ministry was at a standstill long before Coronavirus hit. Multiple dance conferences faced troubling budget shortfalls. Poverty and underfunding stifled the progress of worship artists both inside and outside of the traditional church setting. Several who had labored in the dance for years became discouraged and faced fierce opposition. Dozens deserted the dance floor.

What do you do when your passion brings intense pain along with it? A once exciting assignment can become excruciating when you are faced with constant strain from leadership, team members, and even foes who misunderstand the movement.
Most dance conferences look exactly the same. In fact, most dance teams of today look the same way that most did at least 25 years ago. Why is that? "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge..." - Hosea 4:6a

Dance ministry books are published each year, but can you name at least five of them? Movement ministry organizations are still in existence, but most of them are not thriving the way they were in years past. Dance ministry leaders and influencers on the national and international levels are at odds (but nobody wants to talk about the truth of what is really going on). In the Bible, when Miriam (the dance leader) was out of order, the entire nation STOPPED. Nobody could move forward while Miriam was outside of the camp. It's time for the "Miriams" of dance to be healed so that the people can move forward.

As I have served as a worship arts educator since 2003, my heart has been crushed by the limited knowledge of wondering worshipers worldwide. This goes beyond a general understanding of who danced in the Bible and why. It's almost as if a strong system of sabotage was unleashed against the dancers even at the hands of Pastors, Music Ministers, and the church leadership at large. WHO FRACTURED THE BODY?

Moving Through the Scriptures was not written to just be yet another dance ministry book. It was penned to provoke a revolution that would spark entire congregations to return to the biblical model of worship that encourages EVERYONE to report back to the dance floor. Yet, it sat in my computer since 2015, unreleased. Why? It wasn't ready then. I believe that we are ready now because we finally have an opportunity to listen and learn.

I am currently teaching a group of scholars how to do more than wear pretty garments and execute a flawless 8-count. The future of the dance ministry starts with its leadership. We need more innovation. We must be relevant. We must be excellent. Our Pastors, Bishops, Apostles, Prophets, Teachers, Elders, Worship Leaders, and Boards of Directors need to understand that this next move is GOD's. I invite you to unlock the fullness of your understanding of worship arts and help us bring a great move back to the place where it belongs.

If you long for a REAL, fresh encounter through the Word as it pertains to movement, I invite you to join us. This next 90-Day Immersion is not about writing lengthy papers, proving that you can dance, or becoming important in the eyes of others. Let's work together to retain this knowledge so that we can serve as worship arts advocates, EQUIPPED and energized to contend for the faith
--one step at a time. Even if you are a seasoned minister of movement, your understanding will be stretched as we move into this next phase "twogether."
